Taylor Swift debuted her new song, "Carolina," in the first trailer for the upcoming film Where the Crawdads Sing, an adaptation of Delia Owens' 2018 novel of the same name. The movie stars Fresh's Daisy Edgar-Jones and is being produced by Reese Witherspoon's production company Hello Sunshine.

"Carolina" is Swift's first completely unreleased song since she dropped her album Evermore in late 2020. Written together with her friend Aaron Dessner with whom she previously collaborated on his last two albums, Folklore and Evermore, the song recalls the melancholic notes of the old hit "Safe and Sound," which was written as the lead single on The Hunger Games soundtrack.

"Where The Crawdads Sing is a book I got absolutely lost in when I read it years ago," wrote the singer in an Instagram post. "As soon as I heard there was a film in the works starring the incredible @daisyedgarjones and produced by the brilliant @reesewitherspoon, I knew I wanted to be a part of it from the musical side."
She continued, "I wanted to create something haunting and ethereal to match this mesmerizing story. You’ll hear it fully soon."

Over the last year, the singer has dedicated her efforts to re-recording her older music—with the addendum "(Taylor's Version)"—that was recorded while she was under contract at Big Machine Records in a move to regain the right to her own songs.

In 2021, Swift dropped Fearless (Taylor's Version) and Red (Taylor's Version), both to massive success. On these re-released albums, the singer also premiered several unreleased songs "from the vault,"  including the original 10-minute version of her breakup ballad "All Too Well," which fans believe is about her breakup with actor Jake Gyllenhaal. In February, she also collaborated with Ed Sheeran on a remix of his song "The Joker and the Queen."
