The Duke of Edimburgh was born in Greece and then moved to England, to end up near one of the most powerful women in the world
 

He was born on 10 June 1921 in the Greek island of Corfu and was the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg.&nbsp;His childhood was fragmented and full of difficulties. From his family&rsquo;s exile after a coup to the move to England for living with her mother&rsquo;s relatives, he&rsquo;s said to have been an unhappy child.&nbsp;

The mum is always the mum and <a href="https://www.lofficiel.co.uk/pop-culture/prince-philip-died-at-age-99">Prince Philip</a>&#39;s mother is a very interesting figure and&nbsp;who lived many different experiences, always shrouded in a halo of mystery.

For a start, Alice of Battenberg was deaf: a terribile handicap to live with in those times, and she was admitted to a sanatorium, a sort of hospital. So, <a href="https://www.lofficiel.co.uk/pop-culture/who-will-attend-prince-philip-funeral-harry-meghan">Prince Philip </a>was &nbsp;taught to read lips and studied French and Deutsch.Moreover, in 1930-&nbsp;when he was eight years old-&nbsp;his mother was committed to a secure psychiatric centre because she had a nervous breakdown. 
After those experiences, the mother became a nun too.&nbsp;

Prince Philip struggled again and again in a life between shadow and light, darkened in losses. Once, speaking about his childhood and family, he said: &quot;It&#39;s simply what happened. The family broke up. My mother was ill, my sisters were married, my father was in the south of France. I just had to get on with it. You do. One does.&quot;

Philip was 18-year-old when he met&nbsp;his third cousin, 13-year-old<a href="https://www.lofficiel.co.uk/pop-culture/queen-elizabeth-children-family-tree"> Princess Elizabeth </a>and&nbsp;seven years later, in 1947, <a href="https://www.lofficiel.co.uk/pop-culture/prince-philips-death-all-you-want-to-know">the couple&nbsp;announced their engagement.&nbsp;</a>There were happier times ahead, but there&#39;s is no doubt that his turbolent&nbsp;childhood have marked his life near the royal consort.&nbsp;
