Velvet Dresses for Winter 2024: Trendy Ideas from the Fashion Shows

A great classic of winter fashion makes its return in style as the Holiday season approaches. Evening outfits, jackets, trousers, décolleté: the most beautiful velvet models from the Milan and Paris fashion shows.

Velvet confirms itself as one of the absolute protagonists of the autumn winter 2024 season, celebrated by designers for its timeless elegance and its timeless charm. On the catwalks, this versatile fabric has been reinterpreted in original ways, ranging between retro and modern styles.

Velvet probably originated in the East and in Italy the word appears around the thirteenth century. The first fabrics of this type were produced in Palermo and Venice, followed by Amalfi and Lucca. In the fifteenth century, Florentine velvets became known for their quality and were exported all over the world. During the following century, Venice became the main centre of production of velvets, first plain, then worked. Outside Italy, only France stands out for a significant production of velvets, which began in the fifteenth century. After a period of decline towards the end of the nineteenth century, the production of velvet in Italy resumed around 1860, especially in Liguria, followed by Venice, Milan and Florence .

Perfect for the end-of-year holidays , Christmas and New Year's Eve , velvet is an elegant choice not only for special occasions, but also for everyday wardrobe, thanks to its aesthetic and practical qualities. Softness and shine make it ideal for facing the coldest days without sacrificing refinement. Although mainly associated with long evening dresses, velvet also lends itself to more casual and versatile interpretations, such as jackets, skirts or suits designed for the day. The most popular tones remain the traditional ones, but the bold shades seen on the catwalk demonstrate how velvet can easily adapt to any stylistic need, making it a leading material in this season's fashion.

From simple applications, such as the green ribbons applied on a Prada dress to girly minidresses by Gucci and Chloé to the unmistakable paisley by Etro . The color palette is eclectic and versatile, embracing the entire range of shades: from black, a symbol of formal elegance, to more festive colors such as blue and red , to olive green , the undisputed protagonist of winter.
