21 years have passed but gender-based violence has not disappeared: it is recorded that in Italy 2/3 of women are killed by their partners, ex-partners or relatives . In 2020 alone, 56 women were killed during the lockdown (one every two days) and 60 were the femicides that took place during the days of non-lockdown. Today, November 25, 2020 , is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women , which was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999.

Violence against women has always existed and also thanks to the #METOO movement, with the accusations of the stars, from Rose McGowan to Salma Hayek to Henry Weistein , public opinion has started to be shaken. Think of Tina Turner who was abused by her ex-husband Ike for 14 years in the 1980s or Rihanna , whose face swollen photo went around the world in 2009 , because Chris Brown had massacred her on the night of the Grammy Awards. And again Whitney Houston and her long ordeal: the woman was dragged into the abyss of drugs and violence by her husband Bobby Brown. And now the Johnny Depp case who lost the case against the &quot;Sun&quot; who had defined him as a &quot;female thug&quot; after the confessions of his ex-wife Amber Heard (the marriage had in fact lasted only 15 months ) for charges that they were also worth the loss of film contracts.

Thanks to courage, a step forward was made, the women in question had had the courage to denounce the violence. In reality, in fact, the victim does not always find the strength to make their voice heard and ask for justice . And why? The reasons are varied, fear and shame the main ones. And after all, how to blame those who decide to remain silent in the face of violence for fear of psychological torture by society and the media that confession would entail?

The Queen of social media Chiara Ferragni explained it very well in an IGTV that she posted last Friday on her profile and which immediately went viral. These phrases are the basis of the &quot; Victim Blaming &quot; , the phenomenon of blaming the woman who has suffered violence.

Does &quot;Slut-Shaming&quot; mean anything to you? It is the phenomenon whereby the woman is made to feel guilty or inferior for certain sexual behaviors or desires and in most cases it goes hand in hand with revenge porn. As if to say that sexual freedom is an exclusively male privilege.

The truth is that despite everything we try to tell ourselves, it does not exist, has never existed and never will be any justification for gender-based violence. There is nothing truthful in the famous English expression &quot;Boys will be boys&quot;, &quot;males are males&quot;: it is not the woman who has to change her attitudes because they are considered to be inconsistent with the idea of female respectability that comes to us every day and erroneously transmitted. It is the narrative of events that must change, because being subjected to a media pillory in response to a complaint of violence is unacceptable. And this is precisely the message that initiatives such as the &quot;TULOSAI&quot; awareness campaign designed by Ratio Studio are trying to convey to us . These days you might find in big cities , on the handle of your car or inside the few shops still open, messages like those you are used to seeing hanging on the door handles of hotels, the classic &quot;do not disturb&quot; , but with messages concerning the most used quotations by news media about violence against women.
