A gender fluid fashion show with a sacred soul inspired by papal clothes

In this season Alejandro G&oacute;mez Palomo was inspired by the concept of ecstasy seen from two different perspectives: the religious and the mystical one, with references to the traditions of the clothes of the Catholic Church (without inserting caps or too obvious Young Pope style references), looking at work of &quot;El Greco&quot;, and the physical one, with raves and recreational drugs, surprisingly managing to mix them. He also chose a brand new color palette that includes the vivid colors of the paintings of &quot;El Greco&quot; and unveiled a very special collaboration with Swarovski, whose crystal fringes adorned the sleeves of Victorian bustier jackets. The idea for this Autumn-Winter 2020 collection began with Palomo&#39;s visit to Toledo, the medieval Spanish capital where &quot;El Greco&quot; (1541-1614) - the mannerist Renaissance painter - lived and worked. His dramatic and expressionist style is distinguished above all by the elongated and almost androgynous figures of his paintings, an often irregular pigmentation and the religious theme as a constant in his works of art. This excessive religious expressiveness and ecstasy of the Spanish painter&#39;s subjects led Palomo&#39;s creative director to his childhood in Andalusia, where Holy Week or &#39;Semana Santa&#39; is a mass event with hundreds of processions representing the Passion of Christ, to which he took part in as a child. The embroideries, flowers and candles of these events have always been a reference for the designer who makes them become precious prints that seem to come from past eras. Bagongy trousers, papal robes in red brocade, ruffs and python cowboy or biker boots with metal sole. Because a more sacrilegious ingredient also enters the scene, the so-called Ruta del Bakalao, which was the largest Spanish clubbing movement taking place near Valencia in the 80s and 90s. They become famous for the techno sounds by the most celebrated DJs of the moment, but also for the large quantities of drugs that circulated during their evenings. Palomo, which is aimed at a mixed audience and without gender distinctions, seems to invite us to follow him on the journey of his stylistic identity, poised between the recontextualized historical clothing and the gabber culture.
