On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the event, an exhibition celebrates the cyclical nature of fashion. About Time: Fashion and Duration will be on display at the Costume Institute from 7 May to 7 September 2020.

Fashion, as we know, is an eternal alternation of courses and appeals. The intent of the curator with the About Time exhibition is in fact to question the idea of time in the history of fashion, and to do so, he divided the almost 160 women&#39;s fashion items of the exhibition into two sections: the first is a line storm traced by black outfits, a style chronology from 1870 to 2020 seen as a &quot;calendar of modernity&quot; . The second section is an alternation of counter-chronologies, almost all in white, to be interpreted as &quot;folds over time&quot;. A split, a contrast, a yin and yang reading. &quot;It is a reinterpretation of the history of fragmented, discontinuous and heterogeneous fashion,&quot; said Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute at the Met . The inspiration also comes from Sally Porter &#39;s 1992 film Orlando , based on the Virginia Woolf novel of the same name : the protagonist Tilda Swinton travels through time and, in one scene, enters a maze dressed in an 18th century French crinoline, and as he travels it, his clothes are transformed into clothes from the mid-19th century. We just have to wait to find out how the celebrities will pay homage to this theme, at times more philosophical than actual costume, on the most awaited red carpet of the season.
